ETHIOPIA - Lalesa Gedeb Slow Dry

$23.00

Hi everyone! How’s your summer? Ours just got substantially better. We’ve been waiting to share this coffee since May. It’s our first ever coffee purchased through an auction! Ghosties first auction. Sigh. We’re growing up so fast. Anyway, this coffee comes from the inaugural Beauty of Lalesa Auction from Ephtah Coffee in Ethiopia. Ephtah is a pretty cool coffee retailer that emphasizes sustainable agriculture and supply chain practices. One of their primary goals is to support women in the Ethiopian supply chain. Even seemingly simple acts, like helping women to establish banks accounts, can contribute to massive quality of life improvements. In 2023, Ephtah started their own drying station in Lalesa Gedeb. The Beauty of Lalesa auction featured the best lots produced by the drying station this year. There were 13 lots in all, each grown by the Gedeo people of the surrounding area, who have such a deep tradition of agroforestry that the Gedeb zone has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This specific lot is natural processed and dried on raised beds underneath a greenhouse to supply shade and slow the drying period to 25 days.

This coffee has some serious flower power. Vanilla, violet, and white flowers run amok from the aroma to the aftertaste. I’ve had this coffee present itself in a few distinct ways since I’ve been brewing. When I push the extraction, even more floral notes pop with a Darjeeling tea after taste and caramel sweetness. The tactile heads in a creamy and syrupy direction. But if I back off and brew at coarser grinds, I’m tasting that violet a little bit more with ripe blackberry behind it. The tactile presents more juicy. In either case the acidity is delightfully malic like sweet apples the whole time. The profile to me is complex, but approachable enough to drink all day, especially in that coarser grind range. Good times ahead to pull us through the dog days of summer.
