COLOMBIA - Peñas Blancas Mill
Summer solstice coffee! Woohoo summer! And we’re celebrating with a heavy weight offering from tag team super producers Nestor Lasso and Jhoan Vergara. We’ve featured many coffees individually from these two here and on the pour over menu. We couldn’t have been more delighted to learn that they’ve partnered to create the Peñas Blancas Mill in the Huila region of Colombia. The mill operates as a training center and processing hub for the surrounding small farmers of the area. The collaboration gives the local farmers access to education, techniques, and equipment that they otherwise would not have and leads to improved quality and livelihoods. Collaboration, eh? We’re into that stuff.
So this one is fun. Blue raspberry is a weird note. There is no such thing as a blue raspberry and yet this coffee so vividly recalls the flavor of an electric blue snow cone. In reality that flavor is probably just regular raspberry, but maybe it’s the introduction of the intense sweetness that pushes it into blue territory? There is heavy cotton candy sweetness. Wait. Pink or blue cotton candy? Is there a difference? Maybe what I’m trying to say is that this coffee tastes like you’re at the county fair with a blue snow cone in one hand and pink cotton candy in the other. Yeah. That’s a good time.
Also this is the coffee we turned into sorbet and it’s awesome.
